Women’s soccer: Pirates win OT thriller for program’s third NWAC championship

After 100 minutes of scoreless play, it took just three minutes of a second sudden death overtime to give Peninsula College its third women’s soccer title.

Pirate sophomore striker Bri Vallente took a cross from the endline off a touch by freshman wing Maddy Parton and slipped it passed West Region All-Star goalie Rachel Thompson of Highline for the 1-0 Peninsula win in Tukwila on Nov. 13.

It was PC’s third title in five seasons.

Vallente, who had three goals in the last two matches, was named the Most Valuable Player while teammate Kennady Whitehead was appointed Most Inspirational Player.

Pirate head coach Kanyon Anderson was named the NWAC Coach of the Year.

The narrow victory came as little surprise, as the teams sport the two stingiest defenses in the conference. Peninsula came in to the match with 17 shutouts and allowed only six goals all season — two of which went to Highline in a preseason match on Aug. 28. Highline recorded 13 consecutive shutouts and had only allowed nine goals prior to Sunday night’s match.

Thompson had five saves in the match while Peninsula freshman keeper Akari Hoshino blocked four shots.

Peninsula out-shot the Thunderbirds 12-5.

The Pirates finish the season with 18 consecutive victories and a 19-1-1 mark overall.

Highline finishes the campaign 17-3-0.
