The Bulldogs got the last bark against the Wolves last week.
Sequim fell 55-22 on Jan. 30 in North Mason, with four wrestlers taking wins.
The season-ending loss made it Sequim’s second consecutive season without a team win.
Sequim wrestlers fought injuries, illnesses and their own lack of experience with much of the team being underclassmen this season.
However, tenured wrestlers like senior Royhon Agostine kept the Wolves competitive.
Against North Mason, Agostine (132 pounds) won in a 20-9 major decision over Kyler Hockaday.
Teammates Grant Pierson (120), Kevyn Ward (145) and Michael Latimer (220) all got pins.
Sequim head coach Charles Drabek said Agostine came from behind early to turn it on for the win.
“(Agostine) put him on his back three or four times with near fall points. He finished it off strong,” he said.
Pierson pinned Antonio Ocasio in 4:54, Ward pinned Jackson Odette in 2:38 and Latimer pinned Chase Davis in 3:44.
“Michael looked really good,” Drabek said. “Chase got the first takedown but there was a lot of back and forth.”
Traveling to tourneys
Drabek took Agostine, Latimer and Ward to Washington High School on Feb. 1, where Agostine won all of his matches. The remainder of the boys team went to a Port Angeles JV tournament on Saturday, but full results were not available at press time for either tournament.
The girls team traveled to Mill Creek on Feb. 1 for the Lady Wolfpack Invitational. All three Sequim girls did well, Drabek said, with Sophia Cornell placing third in the 106-pound weight bracket bracket, Alma Mendoza taking third at 118 and Kaylee Ditlefsen tied for fifth at 130.
Cornell went 2-1 with a pin against Mary McConahay of Redmond before losing by pin in the late third round to Auna Carpio of Decatur, the No. 4-ranked girl wrestler in Washington at 106 pounds.
Mendoza went 3-1, pinning her first two opponents. Her only loss came against No. 6-ranked Natalie Smith (116) from Mount Baker.
Ditlefsen went 2-2 with two pins early. She lost her third match to Shannon Gee of Lynden, who took eighth at the state tourney last season. Ditlefsen forfeited her third place match because she reached her 33-match limit on the season, a postseason eligibility restriction.
Looking ahead
The boys team heads to Port Angeles Feb. 7-8 for sub-regionals. The top four of each weight class at the tournament move onto regionals in Hockinson.
Sequim’s girls wrestling squad competes at their sub-regionals the same weekend at Auburn Mountain View High School.
A number of Sequim boys could place in the top four and go to regionals, Drabek said. Some of the hopefuls, he said, include Agostine, Latimer, Ward, Pierson, Shaun Jones, Ty Jones and Nathan Allison.
