Wrestling: SHS grapplers compete at invitationals

Sequim’s wrestling team picked up some wins and early-season experience at a pair of invitationals recently.

Sequim’s grapplers managed three first-place finishes at the Forks Invitational tournament on Dec. 4.

SHS’s girls finished third in team scoring, behind East Jefferson (31 points) and host Forks (30) and ahead of Port Angeles (10).

Forks dominated the boys’ matches with 180.5 team points, with Port Angeles second (95.5), East Jefferson third (80) and Sequim fourth (66.5).

Jordan Hegtvedt of Sequim won the 125-pound division, winning two out of three matches against Port Angeles’ Faye Dachs, while SHS teammate Petra Bernsten took first at 140-145 pounds with three wins. Isabella Gonzalez-Adams of Sequim took second in the 190-235 weight division.

On the boys’ side, Mirek Skov of Sequim took first in the 170 division, beating teammate/brother Ari Skov in the championship match.

Cayden Beauregard of Sequim went 2-1 to come in second in the 106-133 weight class, while Sequim’s Aaron Tolberd of went 2-1 to take second in the 160-pound division.

Bernsten, the reigning Olympic League girls MVP in her weight class, added a pin of East Jefferson’s Chloe Lampert at 3:39 of their 140-pound match in a league meet on Dec. 8 in Bremerton.

On Dec. 11, Sequim’s squad finished 14th out of 19 competing teams at the Larry Brown Invitational in Fife. Rival Port Angeles was sixth.

For the Wolves, Ari Skov had the Wolves’ best showing, going 4-2 to finish fifth at 170 pounds. He earned two pins: Jack Levitt of Mercer Island in 49 seconds and Dylan Stover of Maple Valley in 57 seconds.

Tolberd went 2-2 at 152 pounds. Sequim’s Beauregard earned a pin at 106 pounds, as did Brandon Linson at 132 pounds and Mirek Skov at 160.

In the 120-125 girls division, Isabella Diaz went 1-1 and placed second while teammate Hegtvedt was third.

In junior varsity action, Sequim’s Ty Coone went 3-1 with three pins to place second.

Sequim wrestles at Kingston Dec. 15, the Wolves’ final regular match before winter break.

Sequim returns to action Saturday, Jan. 8, for the annual Battle for the Axe at Port Angeles High School. Competing schools include Forks, East Jefferson, North Kitsap, Peninsula, Klahowya, Olympic, Bremerton, Camas, Fife, River Ridge, Silas (formerly Wilson, Tacoma) and the hist Roughriders.
