Following 13 individual wins at the Mat Classic 2A state wrestling tournament, head coach Tyler Izatt said he anticipates plenty of returners next season with big goals.
“We saw a lot of promise,” he said. “Most of our kids were able to secure a win.”
Ten wrestlers and two alternates went to the Tacoma Dome for the tournament on Feb. 21-22.
Sequim senior Jayms Vilona earned the most wins with three in the 144 pound bracket, and three more Wolves earned two wins: Johnny Vilona at 132 pounds, James Mason at 157 pounds, and Bailey Stein in the girls 120-pound bracket.
Brandon Bair (106), Ryan Spelker (126), Aiden Glenn (165), and Dylan Bowen (215) each won a match, and Finn Jones (120) and Max Sivilli (285) also competed. Riley Downs (138) and Story Snow (115 girls) served as alternates.
Izatt said some players came close to medaling, such as Jayms Vilona, and Mason, a senior, was doing well until he sustained an injury to his ribs.
Nine of the 12 wrestlers who went to state, including alternates, are anticipated to return next season, he said.
“Our young kids really strived hard and next year they know what preparation is needed,” Izatt said.
This summer, wrestlers plan to attend a wrestling intensive camp in Idaho in June, and participate in open gym sessions.
Izatt, who is an assistant coach with Sequim’s middle school program, said there’s also a lot of potential with the upcoming middle schoolers too.
