After seeing a league match postponed last week to snowy weather, Sequim wrestlers were back in action last weekend, earning five top-three finishes at the Lads and Lasses Tournament in Fife on Jan. 18.
On the girls’ side, Petra Bernsten won her 140-pound weight class with a three-match sweep. Bernsten started with a pin for Elma’s Declyn Foster in 1:33, before edging Lincoln High’s Atalia Acosta 6-2 in the semifinals. Bernsten took the weight class title in the second period against Nathalie Singh of Fife, who had to forfeit 3:31 into the match.
Teammate Aleah Chen placed second in the 135-pound weight class. Receiving a bye in the first round, Chen won by injury forfeit in the semifinals against Raylee Miniken of Friday Harbor. Hailey Sheridan of Tahoma pinned Chen in 4:39 for the weight class title.
Alexi Rampp-Taft placed third at 130 pounds. Following a forfeit win over Baylei Mueller of Timberline, Rampp-Taft was pinned by weight class champ Jessalyn Murphy. The Sequim senior came back, however, to pin Aleasiaa Williams of Emerald Ridge in 2:33 and a 19-second pin of Friday Harbor’s Katie Place for third.
On the boys’ side, Isaiah Cowan earned a second place finish at 195 pounds after going 2-1 and earning a pair of pins. Cowan pinned White River’s Carson Grimm in 2:29 in the quarterfinals and took down Trayvon Williams of Kentlake in 1:17. In the 195-pound final, Elijah Humbyrd of Cascade pinned Cowan in 2:35.

Also competing for Sequim were Trevin Oakes (126 pounds), Sam Fitzgerald (145), Aaron Tolberd and Sawyer Street (152).
