Two Sequim High wrestlers won their weight classes and two others placed second at the season-opening Forks Tournament on Dec. 3.
Ari Skov went 3-0 at 182 pounds for a weight class win, pinning Port Angeles Bryson Graham in 1:43 and Sequim teammates Dylan Bowen and Warren Nichols in 29 and 21 seconds, respectively.
Bowen placed second after going 2-1, pinning Nichols in 1:08 and Graham in 1:17.
Aiden Galvin went 2-0 with pins to place first at 106 pounds.
Aaron Tolberd took second place at 160 pounds. After a first round bye he pinned Edwin Black of Forks in 1:08 before falling to Kaleb Blanton of Forks 15-7 in the final.
Cayden Beauregard pinned Norman Prazak of Onalaska in 1:51 and placed third at 113 pounds.
At 145 pounds, James Mason went 2-2 and placed fourth. He pinned David Locklin of Onalaska in 1:43 and Levi Donahue of East Jefferson in 2:31.
Sam Shinkle went 2-2 at 170 pounds and placed fifth. He pinned Steven Gomes of Onalaska in 2:32 and defeated Christian Gomes of Ilwaco, 8-6.
Sam Fitzgerld picked up a pin at 152 pounds and placed sixth.
The Forks boys won their own season-opening tourney with 186.5 points to top the seven-team field. Port Angeles was second (151.5), followed by East Jefferson (132.5) and Sequim (112), with Ilwaco, Onalaska and Mossyrock rounding out the bottom three teams.
On the girls’ side, Sequim’s Isabella Diaz placed second at 120 pounds. She pinned Bailey Womack of Ilwaco in 3:33 and Akili Clevenger of East Jefferson in 3:13.
East Jefferson won the girls meet with 51.5 points while Sequim placed fifth with 13 points.
Tolberd, Bowen place at Larry Brown
Tolberd picked up a fourth place finish and Bowen was fifth at the 2022 Larry Brown Invitational at Fife High School on Dec. 10.
Tolberd, at 160 pounds, opened with a pin of Pfylip Clark-Goten of Auburn-Mountainview in 1:19. After falling to eventual weight class champ Jake Mathews of North Mason in the quarterfinals, Tolberd rebounded with a pin of Port Angeles’ Oscar Ruiz (2:06). He then edged Peter Gomes of Bonney Lake 10-9, and pinned Jericho Jose of Renton in 2:49. Tolberd fell 6-4 to Taras Onika of Auburn in the consolation final.
At 182 pounds, Bowen started with a pin against Stadium’s David Whobrey in 2:16, then pinned Toby Lefeau of Washington in 1:46. He fell in the weight class semis to Dan Novak of Washington and then to Omar Parra of Auburn in consolation final, but rebounded to pin Whobrey for a second time in 2:24 for fifth overall.
Sequim’s Galvin (106 pounds), Mason (145) and Caleb Crooks (285) each earned a win in three matches, all coming by a pin.
Sequim boys placed 16th out of 18 teams. Auburn was first, Auburn-Riverside was second and Washington placed third. North Mason was the top Olympic League team with a sixth-place finish, and Port Angeles took 11th.
