Coach Joe Marvelle calls the Olympic Avalanche’s win in the sixth-grade division of the 23rd-annual Tulip Tournament last week the biggest in the program’s history.
That’s saying a mouthful.
The select girls basketball squad made up of athletes from Sequim, Port Angeles and other North Olympic Peninsula communities has racked up 10 titles and 14 championship appearances in 19 tournaments and an overall 67-13 record in the past two seasons.
That team topped the 13-team sixth-grade girls division at the Tulip Tournament, an event that Marvelle said no Port Angeles-based team (boys or girls) has won the championship of any grade division in its history.
“(I’m) extremely proud of these girls and how hard they’ve worked for two years to get to this place,” Marvelle said. “I’m truly blown away at how they’ve come together as a team.”
In game one, the Avalanche clobbered Anacortes 59-11 behind Madison Cooke’s 16 points and nine rebounds. Jaida Wood added 11 points, nine boards and three assists, while Hannah Reetz had 12 points. Cooke and Myra Walker had four steals apiece.
In game two, the Avalanche dispatched Triple Threat, a Snohomish Club Team, 44-21. Cooke paced the offense with 11 points while Millie Long had 10 points, five assists and six steals. Kallie Wiker of
Sequim had four points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
In game three, the tourney semifinal, the Avalanche avenged an early season loss by to Bellingham Basketball Academy by knocking off BBA handily, 42-25. Cooke led the Avalanche once again in scoring with 17 points while Wood had eight points and nine rebounds.
In the championship game, Cooke and Long had 11 points and three steals each as the Avalanche edged the Hoopstar-41 club team from Bellingham, 45-41. Walker, Wiker and Wood tied for the team lead in rebounds with six.
