Community walk examines garden prep for winter months

The final Second Saturday Garden Walk of the season at the Port Angeles Fifth Street Community Garden is scheduled for 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at 328 E. Fifth St. in Port Angeles, just off Peabody Street and across from city hall.

Your guides will be veteran Master Gardeners Laurel Moulton, Audreen Williams, Jeanette Stehr-Green and Bob Cain, who returns after a brief hiatus.

The Fifth Street Community Garden is at its peak and full of lessons to be learned, Master Gardeners say. Topics to be covered this month include saving seed, ripening tomatoes, fall and winter berry care, season extenders and putting the garden to bed.

Find out what is happening — or should be happening — in local vegetable gardens and berry patches in September.

This educational event is free and open to the public. Walks this year have attracted a number of local gardeners, including a few seasoned gardeners who have shared their vegetable gardening experiences.

The monthly walks are free and open to the public. For more information on the Master Gardener program, go to mastergardener.wsu.edu or call the Clallam County program coordinator at 360-565-2679.
