Learn about protection against vertebrate pests

Veteran Master Gardener Jeanette Stehr-Green will present measures to protect a home garden against damage from deer, rabbits, birds, mice, moles and other vertebrate pests from noon-1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at the next Green Thumb Garden Tips brown bag series event.

The presentation is in the Clallam County Emergency Management Center in the basement of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Stehr-Green will identify damage done by several common vertebrate pests — i.e. animals with backbones — and discuss how to apply the tenants of integrated pest management to vertebrates. She will also list general approaches to controlling vertebrate pests, including removal of shelter and food sources, resistant plantings, fencing, scare tactics, chemical repellents, trapping and use of poisons and baits.

A Clallam County Master Gardener since 2003, Jeanette Stehr-Green gardening articles for the Sequim Gazette and the Peninsula Daily News and participates in a monthly gardening program on KONP. She received the Clallam County Master Gardener Golden Trowel Award in 2010 and is the 2012 Veteran Master Gardener of the Year.

The series, sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners on the second and fourth Thursday of every month in Port Angeles, consists of educational programs designed to help home gardeners establish or improve their gardening practices.

Attendees may bring a lunch. The presentations are free and open to the public.
