Learn how to prep your dahlias at Sequim work party this Saturday

The Sequim Botanical Garden Society community members to the group’s final Work to Learn Party for the 2018 season — with the spotlight on dahlias — starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Terrace Garden in Carrie Blake Community Park, near the James Center for the Performing Arts band shell.

Lee Bowen, the group’s dahlia expert, demonstrates digging, dividing and storing of dahlia tubers for the winter.

Participants are encouraged to work alongside volunteer garden society members as they remove the tubers from the ground, clean them and then learn the secret to divide viable tubers that, after storing over the winter, will be planted and bloom next summer.

Or, come by the garden to observe the dahlia activity and learn about this year’s Terrace Garden renovation and preparation and fundraising efforts for the Rose Garden, the next Sequim Botanical Garden project.

About the garden group

The Sequim Botanical Garden Society is a volunteer partner with the City of Sequim and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides educational information and a visual demonstration of what can be done in home gardening with research-based horticultural practices.

From spring to fall, Work to Learn Parties are an opportunity for novice and seasoned gardeners to volunteer together to cultivate what makes the community park “delightful, distinctive and flourishing,” group members say.

To help during the party, bring gardening gloves, tools, sunscreen and a hat. Or, mingle with other members of the community dedicated to growing the botanical garden.
