Peninsula College hosts student-led dramas

The selections are in, and Peninsula College’s drama production students have selected a pair of wild plays to stage for their student-led productions.

The Drama Class Spring Production is comprised of two classes — Tech Theater Production students who design sets and lighting, and Acting 1 and 2 classes that serve the actors — and both classes vote on a selection of plays to the two most popular. This spring, the plays include “Hot Sex America Zombie Weekend” and “A Dollar,” both set to run May 31-June 2 and June 7-9 at 7:30 p.m. at the school’s Little Theater on the college campus, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Performances also include a preview at noon on Wednesday, May 30, and a matinee at noon on Wednesday, June 6.

Performances are free and open to the public.

Set in a comical environment, “Hot Sex America Zombie Weekend” — an original play by PC English Professor Michael Calvin Mills — is a lustful musical set in modern day New Orleans and follows a pair of FBI agents looking to bust a criminal scheme.

Their adventure includes an evil mastermind and her sidekick, and the FBI pairing two unlikely agents together to stop civilians from getting swindled.

David Pinski’s “A Dollar” is set in the roaring 1920s and centers around group of lost travelers in the forest who don’t know which direction to follow. The show illustrates how greed can take over one’s rational mind. Betrayal and a need for power are triggered when the entourage discovers something in the woods that that all of them want.

“My role in the tech class is helping to paint the set and working on the lighting design,” Zafirah Azmy, a student majoring in finance at Peninsula College said. “It’s all about teamwork, and your tasks can switch often since we are such a small tech team.”
