Dinner offered for the furloughed

For its monthly community dinner, Trinity United Methodist Church is extending a special welcome to federal employees and others affected by the partial shutdown of the federal government.

The free dinner is served at 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at the church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

Reservations are required and may be made by calling the church at 360-683-5367 between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before the dinner, or by email to dinnerstumc@aol.com.

The meal includes meatballs, mashed potatoes, vegetables, carrot-raisin salad, dessert and beverages.

The church presents the dinners on the last Thursday of each month.

Sequim business collecting for U.S. Coast Guard families

RE/MAX Prime, at 901 W. Washington St., is accepting donations to local U.S. Coast Guard families affected by the U.S. government partial shutdown. Donations are accepted from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, through Jan. 31.

Families are in need of the following: cash or checks made out to CPOA (The Chief Petty Officers Association) a 501(c)3; gift cards, and grocery items such as diapers, wipes and non-perishable items such as rice, soup, peanut butter, tuna, etc.

Helping hands at Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is offering a hand to families hurt by the partial federal government shutdown that began Dec. 21.

Federal government employees in Clallam County are invited to The Salvation Army at 123 S. Peabody St., in Port Angeles to receive toys for children celebrating birthdays during this time. Toys are available for infants to children 12 years old.

Parents or guardians need to bring documentation — federal employee ID card, proof of residency in Clallam County and proof of the child’s birth date — to The Salvation Army during the month of their child’s birthday.

The service is available at The Salvation Army’s social service/administrative building from 9-11:30 a.m. Mondays through Fridays and also 1-3:30 p.m. on Monday afternoons.

Democrats accepting funds, donations for furloughed workers

The Clallam County Democrats are soliciting non-perishable food items, cash, checks or grocery store gift cards for area federal employees who have been furloughed or are working without pay.

Food items and checks, payable to the Port Angeles Food Bank, will be delivered to the food bank (they do not distribute cash or gift cards).

Gift cards, cash and checks will be given to athe Chief Petty Officer’s Association for distribution to U.S. Coast Guard employees. They have limited storage for food items.

Donations may be dropped off at the Clallam County Democratic Headquarters, 124-A W. First St., Port Angeles, between 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Monday-Friday. Those who wish to contribute but do not have transportation are asked contact clallamdemocrats.org.

Help for federal workers in PA

Village Concepts of Port Angeles/Park View Villas invites residents who are furloughed or working without pay during the government shutdown to lunch, beginning Friday, Jan. 25, at the facility, 1430 Park View Lane, Port Angeles.

For the duration of the federal government shutdown, Park View Villas will host, for no charge, up to 10 guests per day for the midday meal. To take advantage of the offer, local U.S. Coast Guard, Olympic National Park and other impacted federal workers should 360-452-7222 to reserve a seat, and bring some form of ID indicating they are a federal employee. Guest reservations will be taken for 12:30 p.m.

City to flush system

The City of Sequim Public Works Department will begin flushing the city’s water system starting the week of Feb. 4.

The city is flushing the system to clear out the buildup of sediment and minerals from the pipes. Residents in the area may see discoloration of their water during this time. If this occurs, residents should run water from their faucet until it is clear.

The first phase occurs north of Washington Street to East Oak Street, from Blake Avenue to Brown Road. This phase is expected to be completed by Feb. 28.

Studium Generale focuses on trauma as springboard to resilience

Using childhood trauma as a springboard to resilience will be the focus of the Jan. 24 Studium Generale, beginning at 12:30 p.m. in Peninsula College’s Little Theater, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

Dr. Laura Brogden and Amie Batton present “Adverse Childhood Experiences – A Springboard to Resilience.”

Brogden is an ACEs researcher and Peninsula College Dean of Basic Skills and Corrections Education, and Batton is a basic education program specialist at PC.

Brogden will share the results of her doctoral research on resilience in community college students who have lived through childhood trauma. Batton, who grew up with trauma, will describe her journey to resilience.

Tools for caregivers

“Powerful Tools for Caregivers,” a class designed to help those who care for a loved one also take care of themselves, starts Feb. 5 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

The class meets from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on six Tuesdays, ending March 12. The only cost is $30 for the textbook. Topics include how the caregiver can reduce personal stress, deal with emotions, solve problems, communicate effectively with other family members, make difficult decisions and use community services. The class does not focus on hands-on care for the care receiver.

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4 p.m. at Suncrest Village Retirement Apartments, 251 S. Fifth Ave. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest, a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP (at least 24 hours in advance) to 360-683-8491. Menus are subject to change.
