Sequim Schools’ meal prices may increase

The Sequim School District may be increasing paid school meal prices for the 2017-2018 school year.

At the Board of Directors meeting on May 15, Heidi Hietpas, Sequim School District executive director of finance and operations, presented to board directors a proposal to increase paid breakfast and lunch prices for K-12 students and adults.

The proposed school meal prices would be a 10-cent increase for K-5 breakfast, a 15-cent increase for 9-12 breakfast, K-5 lunch, 9-12 lunch and adult lunch, a 20-cent increase for 6-8 lunch, a 25-cent increase for 6-8 breakfast and 65-cent increase for adult breakfast.

Board directors briefly discussed approving the proposal but decided to wait to take action upon more pending information. The proposal will be included on a future board meeting agenda for further discussion.

Hietpas said the district contracts for its food service so most of the cost is fixed based on the contract. The revenues come from federal, state and local revenue.

She said the district’s food service program has been operating in the negative which means that local levy dollars also have supported the food service program.

Hietpas said during her presentation there was a 10-cent meal price increase across all categories for the 2016-2017 school year.

She said if the increase for paid school meal prices is approved, it will not impact the cost of free and reduced meals which are determined by the National School Lunch Program.

In April, the district served 4,251 students for breakfast and 6,363 for lunch through the paid lunch program. It served 1,169 for reduced breakfast and 2,081 for reduced lunch and 5,643 for breakfast and 8,879 for lunch for free.

The district serves 17,323 meals for lunch and 11,063 for breakfast in total.
