Bank foundation aids foster families

On this peninsula, the smallest of foster children are in the greatest need.

Last week, local foster children and families got a boost thanks to a $500 donation from the Sound Community Foundation to the North Olympic Foster Parents Association.

Laurie Brothers, newly elected president of the group, says the biggest need is clothes for youths 0-12 months old.

Brothers said the Olympic Peninsula has 180-200 foster children.

The foster parents group operates two "care closets" – one in Sequim, one in Port Angeles – to help supply clothes and school supplies for foster children throughout the region.

Foster families in need of children’s clothing from one of the foster association’s two "care closets" may contact Carol Pope at All Safe Mini Storage in Sequim at 683-6646 or Amanda Sanders at 809-0569 in Port Angeles.

"It’s great to see the kids’ eyes when they get new clothes," Brothers said.

"I just want to thank everyone who supports (the association) so that we can provide for them."

The foster parents association’s goal is to advocate for local foster families and promote better understanding of foster care.

The association’s next event is the Spring Fling on Thursday, April 15, at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St.
