Kids Fishing Day set for May 18

Some of these treasures are bigger than the youngsters who hooked them.

No matter — it’s all in a day’s fun.

The 11th Kids Fishing Day returns to Sequim’s Water Reuse Demonstration Site north of Carrie Blake Park on Saturday, May 18, courtesy of the North Olympic Chapter of the Puget Sound Anglers.

Starting at about 8 a.m. to about 2 p.m., youths under the age of 14 are invited to cast their lines in the park’s pond to catch one of hundreds of rainbow trout stocked especially for the event. In addition, an inflatable pond will be constructed for 2- and 3-year-olds to try their hand at landing fish.

Members of the Puget Sound Anglers are on hand to distribute loaner rods and bait, and to assist youngsters with casting, catching, cleaning and weighing their catches.

Food will be available on site for modest prices.

Local anglers stock the pond with up to 1,800 rainbow trout of about one pound in weight and another 500-800 trout weighing between three and six pounds.

Youths under the age of 14 are invited throughout the following days and weeks to land more trout from the pond, as many of the trout in the pond will not be caught in one day.

The North Olympic Chapter meets at 7 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 Blake Ave.
