River Center hosts spider talk

Heather Heys speaks about local spiders at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.

The free lecture covers spiders’ importance, basic body plan and information on local spiders. She will then show some of the specimens that she caught in the park.  

Heys is currently attending Midwestern State University Wichita Falls in Texas where she is wrapping up a Masters degree in general biology.  Her thesis work is based on the effects of air pollution on wheat growing near gas production condensate tanks. Her passion is spiders, though.

Heys teaches botany and anatomy and physiology labs while attending school and worked as a field technician for the George Miksch Sutton Avian Research Center in Oklahoma, volunteered for the River Bend Nature Center and is a licensed teacher for junior high and high school science. She has two sons and is an accomplished children’s fantasy illustrator.
