Woodturner group to meet
Strait Turners, a local woodturners group, meets from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road. Several group members recently attended the American Association of Woodturners Symposium in Portland, Ore., and at the meeting they will offer several short talks on a variety of topics. Book discussion ‘Before the Fall’
The Novel Conversations Book Discussion Group meets to talk about “Before the Fall” by Noah Hawley at 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. To participate, simply read the book and attend the discussion; no reservations are needed and drop-ins are welcome.
Copies of “Before the Fall” are available in various formats including regular print, large print, audiobook and downloadable eBook, which may be requested online by visiting the library catalog at www.nols.org. A limited number of copies of each book discussion selection are available at the library the month prior to each meeting. Demonstration garden walk set
The public is invited to take a guided tour of the Woodcock Demonstration Garden, 2711 Woodcock Road, with a veteran Master Gardener on Thursday, June 28, starting at 10 a.m. The walk will focus on the rose garden where the plants are now in bloom and thinning in the orchard. Learn about the naturally occurring June fruit drop and reasons to thin fruit.
Master Gardeners tend the gardens on Thursday mornings and will be available to answer questions on their respective areas.
The 2.74-acre Woodcock Demonstration Garden is open to the public for free daily.
Reading ‘magic’ comes to libraries
As part of the North Olympic Library System’s annual Summer Reading Program, Jeff Evans will be performing “Reading Magic”at all four North Olympic Library System locations. On Monday, June 25, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., Evans hosts his first performance at 10:30 a.m. on the outdoor stage behind the library. (In the event of inclement weather, the Sequim event will take place in the Sequim Middle School Gym, 301 West Hendrickson Road.)
The Port Angeles Library performance follows that same day at 6:30 p.m. Evans will also put on shows in Forks and Clallam Bay on June 26. See www.nols.org/srp, call 360-417-8500 or email discover@nols.org for more about the summer reading program.
Calling all artists
Organizers of the 2019 Soroptimist Gala Garden Show are calling all artists to submit their work for the event’s featured garden theme. Mediums can be photos, watercolors, acrylics or oils. Interested applicants can find information for submission at the Gala Garden Show website at sequimgardenshow.com.
Harry Potter escape challenge set at North Olympic libraries
Escape from Professor Snape during the North Olympic Library System’s “Harry Potter Escape Room Challenge.” The first challenge will be held at the Forks Library on June 22, the second at the Port Angeles Library on July 6, and the final event is set for 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.
This event, designed for teens headed into grades 7-12, challenges participants to friends to safety from the dungeons of Hogwarts, dodging dark wizards and Death Eater professors during Snape’s regime as headmaster. Teens will work together with other players to find clues, solve critical thinking puzzles, and break codes in order to retrieve “floo” powder to escape.
