The next school board meeting is 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, in the district boardroom, 503 N. Sequim Ave. The public is invited to attend, and time is set aside for public comment. GREYWOLF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Thanks to a community education grant from Beta Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma entitled “Reading Success with Fluency,” second-, third- and fourth-graders at Helen Haller Elementary are becoming more proficient readers with fluency.
The grant enabled Betsy Smith, reading specialist at Helen Haller, to purchase “Read Naturally Live,” an online fluency reading program. Students access the program while participating in Mrs. Smith’s reading club, as well as during the school day. The program visually charts a student’s improvement in fluency, which in turn increases the student’s level of motivation and pride.
The grant from Beta Nu also made it possible for Helen Haller to purchase new and sturdier headphones to use while on the computer.
The teachers, staff and students of Helen Haller Elementary School send a great big “thank you” to Beta Nu Chapter.
SEQUIM
MIDDLE SCHOOL
Students in the Sequim Middle School living skills classroom have been taking outings into the community to learn ways to complete different activities. Activities include checking out library books, finding items in the grocery store, purchasing items at the register and learning about cultural sites in the community.
The students have been learning how to communicate and interact with community members, work in small groups and complete specific learning tasks.
The students will be learning about nature, history, culture, vocations and other specific areas of Sequim during future scheduled outings.
“It has been a rewarding experience for the students and staff to learn and engage with all members of the community,” Living Skills teacher Bred Meckley says. “We appreciate all the hospitality and assistance all businesses and organizations have shown to the students. Thank you so much.”
SEQUIM
HIGH SCHOOL
Kaylee Ditlefsen, a Sequim High School 2015 graduate, led teacher Christy Ditlefsen’s Introduction to Law class on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Washington State Capital in Olympia on Jan. 15. Kaylee is working as a session aide to Sen. Steve Conway, D-South Tacoma, while attending Evergreen State College. Sequim High School students got a chance to say hello to Sen. Kevin Van De Wege, D-Sequim, their legislative district’s senator, during the tour.
The SHS Jazz Band hosts the group’s annual Jazz Dinner Dance on Saturday, Feb. 2, in the SHS cafeteria. The event features the SHS Jazz Band and the Stardust Big Band. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the music starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at Sequim Animal Hospital and Full Moon Candle Company, and will be available at the door. Tickets are $25 per person or $45 per couple and include dinner as well as entry into a prize drawing.
High school freshmen, sophomores and juniors are invited to attend a College ROTC and Academy Night at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, theatre at Central Kitsap High School in Silverdale; for more information, see Mitzi Sanders in the career center.
Seniors, a reminder that the HIV/AIDS presentation, a graduation requirement, will be during DEN on Monday, Feb. 4, at 10:45 a.m. If you are unable to attend DEN, be sure to pick up the make-up assignment in the main office.
The annual ELPA21 (English Language Proficiency Assessment for the 21st Century) takes place in February. All students who qualify for English support will be given the assessment to measure their growth in the English language since last year. Parents are asked to talk with their students about the importance of this assessment. A letter will be sent home with results this spring.
