WSU Master Gardener Margery Whites shares tips for newcomers to gardening in the maritime environment on the Olympic Peninsula starting at noon on Thursday, Feb. 28, in the county commissioners’ meeting room of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Whites looks to help gardeners understand how to select the right plants for the growing conditions at their own locations, examining topography, soil drainage and composition, wind, sun, water and animal life.

Whites is a retired professor from St. Cloud University in Minnesota. She is a 2016 graduate of the Master Gardener Training and serves on the Master Gardener Foundation of Clallam County board of directors.

Whites will also provide an extended three-hour workshop on this topic on May 18 at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden in Sequim.

This presentation is part of the Green Thumb Garden Tips education series, sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners on the second and fourth Thursday of every month in Port Angeles. Programs are designed to help home gardeners establish or improve their gardening practices. Speakers are local and regional individuals with expertise and experience in sustainable horticultural practices.

The presentations are free and open to the public. Attendees may bring a lunch.
