Performers sought for talent show
The Sequim Community Warming Center is planning now for an October talent show as part of its 2019 fundraising drive.
Jean Pratschner, the Warming Center’s volunteer director, is recruiting all types of performers to participate in this event. Solo and ensemble musical acts, dancers, jugglers, magicians, poets, storytellers, animal acts and others are invited to audition.
The show is set for 6-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.
In addition to performers, Pratschner is looking for volunteers to help at the talent show.
The Warming Center’s goal for the coming winter is to be open on any night when the predicted low temperature is 40 degrees or less. This will bump up the cost of rent and utilities, paid staff who supervise the volunteers and other expenses.

PC sets ‘Jazz on the Lawn’ concert
“America’s Classical Music” will be celebrated at the 10th-annual “Jazz on the Lawn” concert set for noon on Monday, Aug. 12 at noon, on Peninsula College’s Port Angeles campus, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.
The concert, held on the terraced lawn just east of the Keegan Hall on the PC campus, will last approximately 90 minutes. Concert goers are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair and lunch. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will take place in the Pirate Union Building (PUB).
The event is free and open to the public.
The PC Jazz Ensemble features Scott Sizer on vocals with an 11-piece jazz band. The group will perform music by Mary Lou Williams, Sammy Fain, Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, John La Barbera, Tito Puente, Tina Brooks, Daniel Barry and two brand new originals by Dr. David P. Jones
Sequim-area musicians in the group include Andy Geiger (tenor sax), Tim Naples (bass trombone), Elaine Gardner-Morales (bass) and Nicia Pfeffer (drums).

Quartet sets ‘WinkApAloozA’
Looking to raise funds for an international competition, the local Wink quartet hosts “WinkApAloozA” from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.
Last April, the quartet won the Region 13 Sweet Adelines quartet competition in Spokane. As the Regional champions, they qualified to compete at the international level with 45 other regional quartet champion and wild card quartets from around the world in New Orleans, La., in mid-September.
The Aug. 10 fundraiser helps with the group’s traveling and housing expenses. Wink will be performing their semifinals songs and a finals package, along with other acts. There will also be light refreshments and a silent auction.

Book group to talk ‘I’ll Push You’
The Second Saturday Book Discussion Group meets to consider “I’ll Push You” by Patrick Gray at 3 pm. Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.
The novel boasts of “two best friends, 500 miles, one wheelchair and the challenge of a lifetime.”

Hear country favs at the grange
Check out the Buck Ellard Band playing country favorites from 5:30-8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18, at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road. Cost is $10, which includes dinner.
Kantowitz featured at Harbor Art Gallery
Glass artist Susan Kantowitz is the featured artist at Harbor Art Gallery, 114 N. Laurel St., Port Angeles, this August.
Kantowitz will be at the gallery during the Second Saturday Art Walk set for 5-7:30 p.m. on Aug. 10, and on Aug. 16, 17 and 25 during the gallery’s open hours (11 a.m.-5 p.m.)
As an undergraduate Kantowitz studied art history and the psychology of perception, and during that time she spent a summer in Europe viewing first-hand cathedrals and their stained glass. She studied the art of metal work at the graduate level for several years at Eastern Michigan University, and when she moved to the Northwest she took advantage of the strong art-glass culture in the Seattle/Portland area, selecting glass fusing as her preferred medium.
“My inspiration comes from nature and trying to express its colors and forms while experimenting with many different techniques,” Kantowitz said. “At present, I’m exploring the flow characteristics of glass that occurs when glass is heated to a relatively high temperature, beyond fusing temperature, and held there for several hours.”
Musicians present chamber concerts in PT
Olympic Music Festivals’ 2019 offerings mark the fifth year of the Olympic Chamber Music Fellowship — the fest’s internationally recognized educational program for young artists.
OMF fellows perform alongside faculty artists at 2 p.m. on Aug. 10 and 1 at the Wheeler Theater at Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend. “Transcendence” (Aug. 10) features works by Brahms, Shostakovich and Schubert, while “Musical Forefathers” (Aug. 11), features compositions by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Mendelssohn.
The OMF concert series takes place on Saturdays and Sundays through Sept. 8 at the Wheeler Theater, except for Aug. 24-25 where they are set at the Northwest Maritime Center.
