JFFA benefit slated for Saturday
“Swinging on a Star,” the Juan de Fuca Foundation Winter Benefit, is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, in the ballroom at the Naval Elks Lodge, 131 E. First St., Port Angeles.
The event features live music by Abakis, dinner, silent and live auctions and a Dessert Dash.
Tickets are $55 per person, with options for two- and eight-person tables.

Adventure series resets event
Because of last week’s wintry weather conditions, the Adventure Travel Series presentation scheduled for Friday, Jan. 17, is cancelled. Brian Anderson of the Peninsula Trails Coalition said organizers will attempt to re-schedule for Saturday, Feb. 8.
The event was scheduled for 7-8:30 p.m. at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St.

Learn listening skills at free workshops
Seeking better relationships in the New Year? Local Toastmasters Lindy MacLaine and Judy Stein invite the community to sharpen listening skills in free, hands-on workshops the last week in January.
Hosted by Skwim Toastmasters, “Listen Up! Skills for a Successful New Year” is set for 7-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave. Registration is requested online at Listen4Success.eventbrite.com.
Hosted by Jefferson County Toastmasters is “Relationship Renaissance: Tools For Effective Listening,” a workshop from noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30, in the fellowship hall of the Grace Lutheran Church, 1120 Walker St., Port Townsend. No registration is necessary.
Facilitators MacLaine and Stein have coaching expertise in their respective personal growth fields.
Fourth Friday guests are Last Wednesday Poets
Nine Sequim poets will read from their newly published “Last Wednesday Poetry Anthology 2019” at the next Fourth Friday Readings, set for 6:15 p.m. on Jan. 24 in the media room at The Lodge, 600 Evergreen Farm Way.
The writing group, Last Wednesday Poets, began in 2012. The current group includes Gary Bullock, Howard Chadwick, Judith Collins, Judith Duncan, Gina Hietpas, Ruth Marcus, Mike Medler, Terry Moore and Stephanie Nead. They have migrated to Sequim from a variety of geographic locations and professional careers, and share a common bond in writing.
Books by the individual poets will be for sale, as will the anthology. Proceeds from the “Last Wednesday Poetry Anthology 2019” go to the Sequim Library Building Fund.
Following the featured speakers, there will be an hour of 5-minute open mic readings. Interested writers may submit their names before the event begins. Rehearse in advance, as readings will be timed. For open mic guidelines, email to lindabmyers@yahoo.com.
Heart by Heart back at 7 Cedars on Saturday
Two of the original members of Heart are keeping the seminal band’s songs going strong, and bringing them back to the Olympic Peninsula.
Bassist Steve Fossen and drummer Michael DeRosier, members of the band that posted Billboard top 200 albums in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2010s, come to Blyn’s 7 Cedars Casino on Saturday, Jan. 25, with Heart By Heart.
The show is at 9 p.m. with no cover (must be 21 or older).
Heart fans can expect to hear familiar hits such as “Magic Man,” “Dreamboat Annie,” “Crazy on You,” “Barracuda” and “Little Queen” from the Northwest-based group featuring vocalist Somar Macek, guitarist-keyboardist-vocalist Lizzy Daymont and guitarist Chad Quist, along with Fossen and DeRosier.

Woodturners to host special guest
The first meeting of 2020 for the Strait Turners Woodturning Club is set for noon on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road.
The featured guest is Larry Miller, and Olympia area artist who will bring several different turned objects that have a natural edge, describe the process for completing the project, and then demonstrate the making of a natural edge bowl, showing the techniques he uses.
The public is welcome. Cost is a $5 door fee for guests.
