Looking to help families unload a bit of the burden of the holidays, local bike riders and others lugged more than a ton of food to the Sequim Food Bank in late November.

The 2021 Sequim Cranksgiving event — an annual community activity one that sees bicycle riders and supports crisscross the area to buy and bring needed food to the food bank the Saturday before Thanksgiving — saw 52 participating riders haul in 2,559 pounds of food.

Organizers also accepted $2,830 in donations.

“We had a very good day,” Sequim Cranksgiving organizer Ton Coonelly said.

The event also sees teams and individuals vie in good-natured competitions; the winning squad was the 3 Crabs Team with 1,273 pounds of food collected, with the Big Kahuna award (most food by an individual) was Denny Bellow (55 pounds), and Little Kahuna (least food collected) went to John Bridge (8 pounds).

The “ZAP” award (most collected by an e-bike rider) went to Chris Clark for his 19-pound haul, and the Youngest Riders honor was shared by twin 2-year-olds Grant and Colt Bosich.
