Dandelions spread about 15 thousand seeds per plant, spreading millions of seeds into their surroundings over time. Find out more on stopping weeds in your garden, such as dandelions, before they multiply, at the next Green Thumb Garden Tips presentation. David Whiting discusses “Where Are All The Weeds?” from noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26, at the Port Angeles Library.

Spring may be many weeks away, but there lurks a force to be reckoned with in the garden as soon as the days grow longer: weeds.

Join David Whiting for the Green Thumb Garden Tips presentation, “Where Are All The Weeds?” and discover where weeds are now and what you can do to keep them at bay when they finally arrive.

The presentation is set for noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St. Or, join via Zoom at the following link: tinyurl.com/GTwhiting (meeting ID 936 2989 8830, passcode 676224) or by phone 253-215-8782.

Some gardeners spend little time weeding with few weeds in their landscapes and gardens. Others spend hours and hours only to have their gardens covered with weeds. Why? Whiting’s class on the science of weeds looks at causes of weed problems and various management techniques to hinder their spread.

Whiting will take the audience through different scenarios on weed prevention, as management depends on the specific weeds and the gardening conditions.

“This class gives a variety of weed management techniques that the individual gardener can incorporate, depending on their specific situation,” he said.

Whiting is an avid gardener and retired professor and extension consumer horticulture specialist in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at Colorado State University. He has spent most of his professional career at the county or state level leading Master Gardener Programs.

Sponsored by WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners, the Green Thumbs Garden Tips education series is offered on the second and fourth Thursday each month through October (in November, December and January, one program is offered). Scheduled presentations are subject to change. Visit the WSU Extension Clallam County website calendar (extension.wsu.edu/clallam) for the latest information on upcoming presentations.
