‘Voices of Land and Sea’ is August show at Blue Whole Gallery

Blue Whole Gallery will present “Voices of Land and Sea” with artists Jean Glaser and Julie Hembree during the month of August. Both artists create multimedia art using collage techniques, but their art and styles are completely different.

Hembree creates coastal-themed multimedia art that uses natural materials such as shells and sea glass. She personally collects these elements, infusing her work with a connection to the ocean. Recently, she began incorporating collage techniques to add new layers of depth and storytelling to her pieces.

“I like to experiment with different techniques,” she said in a press release. “Sometimes the best art for me is the result of a happy mistake.”

Glaser has been an artist for decades. For the last 20 years her work has been primarily animal portraits.

Since moving to the Pacific Northwest, Glaser finds her art is transforming. Still focused on animals, she incorporates patterns and colors unrelated to the subject, using collage, texture, markers and pencils in her process.

In a press release, Glaser described her work as “loud, brash, noisy pieces with humor and heart. Imperious crows, brash donkeys, and colorful chickens. Art that makes you smile.”

Both artists will have their work displayed in the front windows of Blue Whole Gallery, 129 W. Washington St. in Sequim, during August. They will both be present on Friday, Aug. 1, during First Friday Artwalk, from 5-8 p.m.
