Summer may be in full swing, but it is nevertheless time to think about planting your fall and winter crops.
Join Clallam County Master Gardener Pam Pace at Woodcock Demonstration Garden, 2711 Woodcock Road in Sequim, on July 26 for the Digging Deeper Saturdays presentation “Planning Your Fall/Winter Garden” to learn the tips and tricks for successful fall/winter gardening.
During her presentation, Pace will discuss the difference between fall/winter harvest crops and spring/overwintering crops and the advantages of growing both. She will also talk about the importance of timing when planting, as well as the benefits of succession planting.
Pace has done extensive research on fall/winter gardening practices, along with trial-and-error experimental gardening. A past Kootenai County, Idaho Master Gardener and a current Clallam County Master Gardener, she has grown vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers in six different planting zones. Throughout the main growing season, Pace is at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden every Thursday morning where she oversees the Culinary Garden.
Pace and her husband moved to the area five years ago and were excited about exploring the prospect of year-long gardening in a temperate climate. With a long growing season and milder winters, the opportunity to harvest 12 months out of the year was intriguing and has become a personal challenge.
In addition to the scheduled educational presentation, a team of Clallam County Master Gardeners will be available at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to answer all gardening questions. Digging Deeper attendees are encouraged to bring samples of garden problems or pests for diagnosis by Master Gardeners who can recommend control measures.
“Planning Your Fall/Winter Garden” is part of the Digging Deeper Saturdays educational series which is free and open to the public. This presentation will be held in-person, rain or shine at the Master Gardener Woodcock Demonstration Garden.
Presentations cover basic gardening topics relevant to many home gardeners and are scheduled for 90 minutes to allow for demonstrations and questions from viewers. Attendees are encouraged to check the Clallam County Master Gardener online calendar for updates about the location of the talk at https://extension.wsu.edu/clallam/master-gardener-calendar/.
