A 58-year-old Sequim man is in custody in Idaho for allegedly shooting at a Washington State Patrol officer and another driver on Wednesday, Aug. 6.
Idaho State Patrol reports that around 4 p.m. Aug. 6, Idaho State Police (ISP) received a 911 call about a white 2020 GMC Sierra pickup driving erratically southbound on U.S. Highway 95 (Lewiston Hill) in Idaho.
A witness said the driver was waving a handgun through the truck’s sunroof, that they heard gunfire while it was in Whitman County in Washington, and that the driver then fired at the caller’s vehicle while driving on Lewiston Hill.
The Sequim man was later identified as Shawn Johnson, who was found in Lewiston, Idaho, and an ISP trooper conducted a high-risk (felony) traffic stop to arrest him.
ISP troopers report the Sequim man allegedly fired a shot from his vehicle toward a Washington State Patrol officer before coming into Idaho.
After his arrest, ISP troopers report Johnson told them he purposefully fired his gun.
He was booked into the Nez Perce County Jail and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on Aug. 7 with his bail set at $500,000, county staff report.
His next hearing is set for Aug. 29 to review a mental evaluation, staff said.
ISP reports that Johnson may face additional charges filed in Washington.
