Workshop teaches how to raise, sell poultry

Given the growing market for historical, heritage breeds of poultry, both for meat and eggs, Washington State University Clallam County Extensions is hosting an all-day workshop on raising heritage breeds for personal use or sale from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Participants learn to identify breeds of turkeys and chickens, how to select and breed them legally and safely, how to create an environment for maximum, natural production and how to market poultry for a small-farm profit.

Course instructor is Jim Adkins, sustainable poultry specialist from the Sustainable Poultry Network, who visits from North Carolina and has been working in the poultry industry for more than 30 years.

Cost of the workshop, including training materials and lunch, is $69 per household by Friday, April 26, and $89 thereafter.
