Mini farmers’ market coming to OMC

Nash's Organic Produce and Olympic Medical Center will offer a mini farmers' market at Olympic Memorial Hospital.

Nash’s Organic Produce and Olympic Medical Center will offer a mini farmers’ market at Olympic Memorial Hospital.

The market will sell locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables to employees and visitors from 2:30-5:30 p.m. every Tuesday starting July 21, just outside Season’s Café in Olympic Memorial Hospital, 939 Caroline St., Port Angeles.

Nash’s is the host farm, but produce from other Peninsula-based farms will be available as well. Nash’s also will include its farm share program as part of the market.

Local farmers’ markets promote the viability of agriculture and help sustain local farms, according to Graciela Harris, director of nutrition services at Olympic Medical, but equally important the market will promote healthy eating among medical center employees.

According to Rhonda Curry, OMC assistant administrator, improving the health of employees is part of Olympic Medical Center’s current strategic plan.

"Part of our plan addresses employee relations, and one major goal we have is to encourage employees to measurably improve their overall health," she said.

"We now have an employee wellness committee in place, led by our CEO Eric Lewis, which is charged with finding new and creative ways to ensure we have healthy employees providing health care. Bringing the farmers’ market and farm share program to OMC is a tangible first step toward this goal."
