Extra DUI patrols on Clallam County roads through Sept. 4

The Washington State Patrol, in conjunction with 145 other law enforcement agencies around Washington, will have extra DUI patrols out through Sept. 4.

In Clallam and Jefferson counties, the Port Angeles, Port Townsend and Sequim Police Departments, the Clallam and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Offices and the state patrol will be canvassing the roadways in search of impaired drivers.

During 2016, impaired drivers were involved in crashes that resulted in 277 deaths and another 286 serious injuries.

Washington State Patrol troopers arrested 12,949 impaired drivers last year.

Each summer in Washington an average of 149 people die in traffic collisions, in what the state patrol notes is the deadliest season of the year on state roads.

The extra patrols will be targeting impaired drivers in an effort to reduce the number of serious injury and fatality collisions. Impaired driving includes alcohol, marijuana, prescription drugs and other substances that cause impairment.

These extra patrols are part of Target Zero — striving to end traffic deaths and serious injuries in Washington by 2030. For more information, visit www.targetzero.com.
