A win at home Monday evening helped the Wolves’ girls soccer team inch closer to matching North Mason in the standings, but a return appearance to the West Central District tournament isn’t in the books for Sequim this year.

Sequim (5-6 in the Olympic League, 8-7 overall) finished its final home game of the season Oct. 23 with a 1-0 win over Bremerton (2-9, 4-10).

Goalkeeper Claire Henninger scored the game’s lone goal on a penalty kick 62 minutes in.

The game was gridlocked through halftime but in the second half Sequim opened with a flurry of shots including a handful in the first few minutes soaring over the goal post or just left.

On the game, the Wolves finished with 19 shots and Henninger had two saves.

“It was an impressive display of soccer last night as Wolves were able to add another element to their game that had been waning in the second half of the season,” Vander Velde said.

He added that Yana Hoesel, Mary McAleer and Kristina Mingoy had “some incredible attacking runs that allowed the Wolves to push numbers forward and threaten the Knights.”

Vander Velde also commended the efforts of Adare McMinn, Henninger, Jillian Hutchison, Eden Johnson and Jessica Dietzman.

Coaches and players were hopeful for a chance to play at districts again after being eliminated last year by Port Angeles just shy of the team’s first state berth. However, North Mason (6-5, 8-6-1) will maintain the fourth seed regardless of winning or losing their final game against Port Angeles, who hold the third seed at 7-4, 9-6.

Vander Velde said even if Sequim and North Mason tie in the standings, they split their games against each other and the WIAA looks at who the two teams beat ranked higher. The Bulldogs defeated North Kitsap twice and Sequim only beat them once.

Sequim finishes its season tonight, Oct. 25, in Kingston (1-10. 2-12).The Wolves defeated Kingston 2-0 earlier in the season.
