County sets meeting on Dungeness Recreation Area Master Plan

A public meeting regarding the Dungeness Recreation Area’s Master Plan Update is set for 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9 at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road.
The meeting is an opportunity for residents to discuss issues and concerns, and provide ideas about park uses and improvements.
Clallam County is undertaking an update to the Master Plan for the 216-acre Dungeness Recreation Area County Park adopted by the county in 2010.
According to Joel Winborn, Director of Clallam County Parks, Fair and Facilities, “It’s been a decade since we looked at new and upgraded facilities needed at the Dungeness Recreation Area County Park and, in the intervening decade, a variety of physical changes and recreational trends suggest that portions of the Master Plan need to be revisited.”
These include continual erosion along the bluff requiring relocation of trails, roads and viewpoints; creating direct access to the Wildlife Refuge; and increased demand for overnight use of park facilities including RV camp sites.
The Master Plan update will address:
• Additional day and overnight use of park facilities, including the potential for a third camp loop with hook-up RV camp sites (electricity only) near existing camping facilities, and a group area;
• Relocation of the existing bluff trail system, a portion of Voice of America Road, parking and viewpoints affected by continued erosion of the bluff and
• Critical information needs as day and overnight visitors enter the park.
It’s anticipated that the Master Plan update will be completed before the end of 2017, with approved improvements implemented over time as funds permit.
