Local gymnasts kicked off the 2017-2018 prep season at the WOWI Invitational Gymnasics Meet on Dec. 16, at Auburn Mountainview High School in Auburn.

The meet has saw each event divided into three or four competitive divisions, allowing gymnasts to be scored only against athletes at the same skill level; there were no all-around scores and no team scores.

Schools competing in the first session of the meet with Port Angeles and Sequim were Auburn Mountainview, Bellingham, Camas, Central Valley, Evergreen, Hazen, Kingston, Sehome and Squalicum.

A trio of Sequim gymnasts — Lesae Pfeffer, Emma Sharp and Elizabeth Sweet — joined their Olympic Peninsula cohorts at the meet. (Since Sequim High does not offer gymnastics as a team sport, Sequim athletes compete with Port Angeles during the season; if they qualify, local gymnasts represent Sequim at postseason tournaments).

Pfeffer took top honors in the State Division on bars. Sharp took sixth place in the Olympic Division on the vault while Sweet was 10th on the beam in the National Division.

The team’s next competition is Jan. 6 in Bellingham against Sehome High.

Pfeffer and Sweet qualified for the state 1A/2A/3A tournament in 2016-2017, both earning personal best scores in the floor exercise.
