Backed by a varsity lineup of upperclassmen and freshmen, Sequim’s boys golf squad proved — for the fourth consecutive season — to be unbeatable in league play.

The Wolves capped another 9-0 Olympic League and league crown with a 158-198 win over visiting North Kitsap on April 23, in preparation for postseason play.

That postseason started April 30 with the Olympic League Championship at Sequim’s own The Cedars at Dungeness golf course, where the top seven players advance directly to the state 2A tourney and next nine players to the West Central District tourney on May 14; results of the league tourney were unavailable at press time (see cmg-northwest2.go-vip.net/sequimgazette for updates).

On April 23, Sequim’s Paul Jacobsen — last season’s league MVP — led the way with a 36, followed by league 2017 MVP Blake Wiker’s 38. Tied for third were two other Sequim players: freshman Ben Sweet and senior Liam Payne, with rounds of 42.

“I feel very happy for both seniors, Liam Payne and Blake Wiker, who not only finished the season strong, but are in a rare club of athletes that have never lost a match in their entire four-year career of high school athletics,” Sequim boys’ head coach Bill Shea said.

The win extends Sequim’s boys’ league match winning streak to 42 in a row.

Girls top NK, place third

Sequim’s girls made it a sweep of the visiting Vikings with a 204-208 win on April 23, helping SHS place third for the season behind league champ Klahowya and Olympic.

NKs’ Samantha Henricks shot a 46 to edge out Sequim senior Yana Hoesel by two shots for medalist honors. NK’s Greta Jagodzinske was third (49), with Sequim’s Brittany Gale and NK’s Chloe Hoepfinger tied for fourth with 51. Sequim sophomore JoNell Hill was sixth (52).

The Wolves finished 7-2 in league play.

Both Sequim teams are slated to compete in the Duke Streeter Invitational in Port Angeles on May 7.
