Staff with the City of Sequim continued the tradition of planting a tree on its Arbor Day on Nov. 21.

Mayor Dennis Smith read a proclamation to a small group before a tupelo tree was planted near the entrance to the Water Reuse Site’s waterfall, 202 N. Blake Ave.

The planting also honors the city’s designation as a “Tree City USA” by the Arbor Day Foundation.

Last year, city staff planted an apple tree by the northern playground in honor of the late Mike Brandt, who retired as the city’s Public Works operations manager. City staff said this time of year is ideal for planting a tree.

Sequim has been a Tree City USA for three years for following guidelines such as following its tree care ordinance.
