What winter break hangover?

Sequim’s Wolves showed little sign of rustiness coming off a 34-day break from competition, routing a similar-sized Klahowya squad 90-59 on Jan. 23, their final home meet of the 2019-2020 season.

Sequim (2-3) won eight of the 11 events and picked up two sweeps (50, 100 free) for their second win of the season.

Senior Deven Biehler picked up two individual wins, with a 24.75-second finish in the 50 free (a district meet qualifying mark) and 57.88-second mark in the 100 free, while teammate Kaleb Needoba added two individual wins as well, taking first in the 200 individual medley (2:18) and 100 butterfly (1:00), both district meet qualifiers.

Jesse Bobst had a win in the 100 breaststroke (1:16, a district qualifying time) while teammates Jordan Hurdlow and David Melcer had strong 2-3 finishes in the 200 free (2:22.90 and 2:25.29, respectively), just behind Klahowya’s Wyatt Veterfeuille (2:22.54).

Zen Graham added two second-place finishes, in the 50 and 100 free races.

Sequim also swept all three relays, winning the 200 medley (1:55.59), 200 free (1:49.25) and 400 free (4:01.99).

The Wolves paid tribute to the five seniors on their nine-swimmer roster, including Biehler, Bobst, Graham, Hurdlow and Rane Forcinel.

Looking ahead

Sequim sees one more regular league meet — Jan. 28 at North Kitsap — before competing at the Divisional Invitational (Last Chance Meet) held Jan. 31 at Olympic High School in Silverdale.

Qualifying athletes compete at the 1A/2A West Central District meet Feb. 14-15 at Hazen High School in Renton, with the state 1A/2A finals slated for Feb. 21-22 at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way.
