Peninsula College offers more Dream Week events

Peninsula College’s Associated Student Council, Magic of Cinema, ʔaʔk̓ʷustəƞáwt̓xʷ House of Learning, PC Longhouse and Studium Generale welcome the community to Dream Week, with events continuing through Jan. 22.

Peninsula College is partnering with The Port Angeles Racial Justice Collective on events to commemorate the week, and are grateful for their contributions and for the generous support from the PC Foundation to make such programming possible.

Dream Week honors Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy, his emphasis on “remaining awake,” and his lessons focused on the “three evils of society: racism, materialism, and militarism.”

Events kicked off Jan. 14 with Dr. Jeaninne Wallace’s Studium Generale presentation, “The Transformational Leadership of Bayard Rustin.”

Upcoming events include:

Jan. 18-22 — Dream Week Art Contest, “Joining Hands for Justice.”

Capture Dr. King’s legacy with art in any medium. Send a photo or short video of artwork to ASC@pencol.edu by 5 p.m. on Jan 22.

Students are eligible for prizes as follows: First place $50 gift card, second place $30, and third place $25.

Community and staff members are welcome to participate as exhibition (no prizes).

Wednesday, Jan. 20 — Magic of Cinema Film screening

All are welcome to a free screening at 3:30 p.m. of “Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin,” which follows Rustin’s 60-year career as an activist, organizer and “troublemaker.”

The screening is followed by a panel discussion at 5 p.m. with members of the Port Angeles Racial Justice Collective and Nitasha Lewis, Upward Bound coordinator at Peninsula College.

The collective “works to understand, unlearn, and dismantle racism and the institutions that perpetuate it, hold a safe space for community members, and uplift the voices of black, indigenous and people of color,” PC representatives say.
