Runners, walkers brave rain for Railroad Bridge races

A little rain and a slightly modified race course didn’t seem to spoil the turnout for the annual Railroad Bridge 5k and 10k races.

About 300 runners and walkers turned out in person and another 900 “virtual” racers representing 48 states toed the line for the second of five races in the Run the Peninsula series, held near Railroad Bridge Park on April 24.

Port Angeles natives took three of the top four finishes in the race, held between Carlsborg and Sequim and finishing west of Railroad Bridge Park, with construction continuing at the park’s Dungeness River Audubon Center.

Michael Higuera of Port Angeles won the 10k with a time of 39:42 while Elizabeth Boyden of Port Angeles was the first female finisher in the 10k with a 46:32 finish.

Michael Lessor of Port Angeles won the 5k race a time of 18:18and Maple Valley’s Shannon Newman was the first female 5k finisher, clocking in at 21:44.

Among top Sequim finishers, Stuart Howard-Smith finished the 10k in 41:49 for fourth place while Olivia Preston was Sequim’s top female 10k finisher, placing sixth in her division in 54:19. In the 5k, Heidi Austin was the top female and fourth overall in 21:50, with Jackson Laboy the top Sequim 5k male, finishing in 26:27.

The race featured a pair of Sequim 10k runners separated by eight decades. Roan Curran, 8, was the race’s youngest competitor but was losing some steam, noted her father Michael, when Milliman playfully prodded, “You’re not going to let this 88-year old beat you, are you?”

The 10k was Roan’s first. Both runners finished at about 90 minutes.

“(It was) tiring but surprisingly easier than I thought,” Curran said. “When I saw my brother pass me on the way back, I thought I wouldn’t win and I wanted to quit.”

When asked if she would still be running at Milliman’s age, about 80 years later, Curran noted, “I might be running 10ks. I can’t see 80 years ahead but I think I’ll be running, and running a farm.”

The Run the Peninsula Series is sponsored by the Sequim Gazette and Peninsula Daily News, and the Railroad Bridge run was presented by Olympic Medical Center and Delta Dental of Washington. The virtual race is still open for registration; see runthepeninsula.com for more information or to register.
