Boys basketball: Top-ranked Vikings pull away in second half against Wolves

Even without arguably the best player in Class 2A in Seattle Pacific-bound Jonas La Tour, North Kitsap is a formidable foe.

That lesson was reinforced as Sequim battled, but ultimately came up wide of the mark, in a 78-40 loss to the Associated Press No. 1- ranked Vikings on Jan. 20.

North Kitsap also boasts University of Dallas-bound Johny Olmstead who led all scorers with 27.

The Vikings’ sophomore point guard, Cade Orness, who also appears bound for a college hoops career, had 23 points.

“They were without Jonas La Tour, but they are still very good,” Wolves coach Greg Glasser said. “We got to within 15 (points) in the third quarter, but turnovers and their easy transition baskets did us in.”

Isaiah Moore led the Wolves with 15 points. Pryce Glasser had 14 on the night.

Sequim followed that with a heartbreaking, 54-52 loss at Bremerton on Jan. 22 After losing by 25 to the Knights at home earlier in the season, the Wolves (2-6, 3-9) nearly upended their hosts in a Saturday league match-up.

Sequim got off to a slow start — just four points in the first quarter — before closing the gap with strong second and third quarters.

The Wolves were led by Tyler Mooney’s 18 points.

“After a rough start our boys battled back and kept it close and had a chance to win it in the end,” Sequim coach Greg Glasser said. “Tyler played his best game and was a big reason we were in it at the end.”

Moore added 13 points for the Wolves.

Coming up

Sequim hosts Kingston on Jan. 27, then plays at Olympic on Jan. 29 and at Kingston on Jan. 31.

The Wolves then play three games in three days — Feb. 3 at home against Port Angeles, Feb. 4 at North Mason and Feb. 5 at Port Angeles — before finishing the regular season with a non-league home match-up with 1A Klahowya on Feb. 7.
