She didn’t make the medal stand, but Sequim High’s Petra Bernsten ended her high school career with a pair of wins on prep’s biggest stage.
Bernsten picked up a pair of wins at the MatClassic state 2A tournament in Tacoma this past weekend, finishing 2-2 and just two wins from a top-eight finish in the girls’ 140-pound weight class.
Bernsten opened with a pin of Mount Baker senior Camryn Jewell in just 71 seconds.
In round two, however, Bernsten was pinned by undefeated Alondra Morales, a junior from Royal and top-ranked wrestler in the class by washingtonwrestlingreport.com.
In the consolation bracket, Bernsten defeated Laney Flores of Mount Vernon 12-6 before being bounced from the bracket by No. 5-ranked Samantha Blank of Yelm in a first period pin.
Bernsten finished her final season with a 21-9 mark, overcoming an ankle injury sustained late in the season to place sixth at sub-regionals and fifth at regionals.
“Petra is gifted on her feet and has more tools to get the tough opponents down to the mat,” Sequim coach Chad Cate said.
Bernsten’s teammate Cayden Beauregard, a sophomore ranked No. 12 by washingtonwrestlingreport.com, had a tougher time in his first state tourney.
Beauregard fell 16-0 in the first round to No. 2-ranked Othello sophomore Isaac Campos, then was pinned by No. 8-ranked Burlington-Edison senior Junior Sandoval in the first period.
Beauregard just started wrestling this season.
“That is an enormous feat for him and it goes to show the level of intensity and eagerness that he and the rest of his teammates have been putting on the wrestling mat this season,” Cate said.
“Cayden has been showing steady improvement every week and is showing what he is capable of by winning the hard matches when it counts.”
Cate said he was impressed with what he saw from Sequim wrestlers this season.
“All in all this has been a great season with a mix of new and veteran wrestlers,” Cate said. “We are continuing to build a tough team that will be ready to make a dent in the Olympic League next season.”

“Aaron, a team captain, consistently demonstrates the physical and mental toughness required to pull off victories late in matches. I hope that he has a chance to wrestle at the Tacoma Dome because he certainly belongs there.”
