Prep sports: Bates, Julmist lead Wolves in all-league honors

A pair of junior Wolves earned All-Olympic League first team honors following their state tourney-qualifying run in 2021-2022, two of Sequim’s four all-league selections.
Guard Hannah Bates and forward Jelissa Julmist were selected for the first team after helping Sequim earn a 19-5 record and berth in the state regional tourney.
Bates also earned the team’s Sportsmanship Award.
Earning all-league second team honors for SHS were sophomore Jolene Vaara and senior Hannah Wagner.
Ellie Brockman of Kingston was named league MVP, while Port Angeles’ Mike Poindexter was named Coach of the Year.
Port Angeles’ Eve Burke was named to the first team and Bailee Larsen to the second team.
Wrestling
Sequim’s Jordan Hegtvedt (120-pound weight class) and Petra Bernsten (135) were named to the All-Olympic League list.
Bernsten earned a pair of wins at the MatClassic State finals after placing fifth at regionals. Hegtvedt went 3-2 at a tough sub-regional tourney and was a regional alternate.
No Wolves were selected for the boys team, one dominated by Bremerton (seven selections) and North Kitsap (four).
Port Angeles boys Raymond Rodriguez (120) and Phoenix Flores (126) were selected for the boys’ squad, while Riders Natalie Johnson (100), Zakara Braun (110), Fay Dachs (115) and Kennedy Bruch (130) were picked for the girls’ team.
Sequim’s sportsmanship awards went to Hegtvedt and Brandon Linson.
Bowling
Sequim senior Gabby Mattern-Hall was named to the Olympic League’s all-league team. She also earned the team’s Sportsmanship honor.
She was second in the team with a 135 average during the regular season.
Klahowya’s Lucy Mitchell was named league MVP, one of four Eagles named to the all-league team.
Boys basketball
Sequim’s boys didn’t earn a spot on the all-league team this season, as state qualifiers North Kitsap and Port Angeles dominated the list.
Junior Isaiah Moore was selected for Sequim’s Sportsmanship award, as Sequim finished 6-14 this season.
NK’s Jonas La Tour was named MVP while Viking teammates Johny Olmsted and Cade Orness on the first team with Port Angeles’ Wyatt Dunning and John Vaara and Bremerton’s Kanye Taylor.
The all-league second team includes PA’s Xander Maestas, Bremerton’s D’Angelo Moore and Ruppe Wilson, Bainbridge’s Cliff Hennessey and Kingston’s Zach Mead.
Port Angeles’ Kasey Ulin was named Coach of the Year; his Roughriders placed sixth at the state 2A tourney.
Ranked No.1 for much of the season, North Kitdsap placed third.
