Writers to talk their craft at Sequim gallery

Three local novelists read and discuss the writing process when the Olympic Peninsula Authors host a free Writers Read event from 2-3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28, at Blue Whole Gallery, 129 W. Washington St.

Romance writer Melee McGuire, sci-fi writer Eric Little and literary fiction writer Tod Cheney will share readings from their works in progress.

Each is at a different stage of the publishing process, event organizers note: McGuire’s agent will seek a traditional publishing contract this January, Little is completing the sequel to his first book, published by a small press, and Cheney is in the final stage of rewrites before making a final decision on what direction he will choose to go for publication.

Student art on display at Civic Center

Check out dioramas created by kindergarten and first graders from Olympic Peninsula Academy at the Karen Kuznek-Reese Gallery at the Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St., through the first week of January.

Teacher Rebecca Bullard’s students created the dioramas of Native American dwellings; each student was given a region and tribe and asked to research and create the dwellings.

Peninsula Singers seeking members

Peninsula Singers will conduct auditions for their gala Spring Concert scheduled for the end of April.

Centerpiece for the concert will be “Requiem” by Garbiel Faure, written for mixed choir, soprano and baritone soloists and small orchestra.

The second portion of the program will feature music of renewal and celebration with “spring” themes.

Singers of all voice ranges are welcome; however, music director Dr. Jerome Wright especially needs to increase the bass and tenor sections to cover the expanded divided lower voice parts that the composer had in mind, group members said.

Singers are encouraged to contact Wright at maestro@olympus.net for more information and to schedule an audition.

Auditions will be held the evening of Jan. 5 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 N. Blake Ave. Rehearsals begin Thursday, Jan. 12, at Trinity United Methodist Church, set for 7-9 p.m.

Harmony group to host ‘Guest Night’

Juan de Fuca Harmony, formerly known as the Olympic Peninsula Men’s Chorus, is kicking off 2023 with a guest night, set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, at Sunland Golf Club, 109 Hilltop Dr.

The group — a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society originally chartered in 1983 and celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2023 — welcomes all men and women interested in singing with the chorus. Group members will welcome guests with a few songs and then get everyone involved in learning a few short simple songs called “tags,” which are pieces arranged to quickly get everyone singing in four-part harmony.

Juan de Fuca Harmony are under the direction of Linda Muldowney. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 at Sunland.

Auditions set for ‘Love Letters’

Olympic Theatre Arts, 414 N. Sequim Ave., hosts auditions for the classics reader’s theatre presentation of “Love Letters” on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 7-8.

“Love Letters” tells the story of two characters sharing their deepest thoughts from childhood to old age. Everyone is welcome to audition for this production that will run Feb. 10-14.

“Love Letters” is a series of letters exchanged over the two characters’ lifetimes, sharing their deepest thoughts along the way. Director Kyle LeMaire — the executive director of The Juan de Fuca Foundation for the Arts – is looking for two couples to split the run of the production, one a cis-gendered couple and one queer couple (LBGTQIA+).

“While the actual script is read by the actors on the stage, we are looking for strong storytellers,” LeMaire said. “The greatness of this show is how the words are guided and delivered through the performers.”
