Sunland golfers hit links, raise $15,400 for ‘the Cure’

The Sunland Women’s Golf Association (SWGA) held its annual “Drive for a Cure” Golf Tournament and luncheon on Aug. 19, and in the process raised $15,400 in donations for the Olympic Medical Center Foundation to provide breast screening and diagnostic services for men and women on the Olympic Peninsula.

Sixty players took the field to compete for golfing honors in the modified scramble format: David and Shane Vassar, Cheryl Coulter and Jay Tomlin won first place low gross; Wes Stoecker, Dan O’Claray, Jeff Fox and Marty O’Brien won first place net.

On-course competition winners included: closest to pin (KP) women, Cynthia Carpine, and Anne Elwell; men’s KP, Jeff Fox and Mike Schmidt; and crazy drives, Sherry Meythaler and Phil Turner.

Since 2011, when the Sunland Women’s Golf Association decided to keep their donations local, they have donated $128,200 to the OMC Foundation.

SWGA representatives said the group appreciates and thanks an anonymous donor for matching a large percentage of funds raised. This year, Sound Bank provided a $500 tournament sponsorship and Rainshadow Laundry and Car Wash sponsored the $500 cash raffle.
