Put a new verb in your vocabulary — GolfBoarding — the act of zipping from hole to hole standing aboard a one-person vehicle branded as a GolfBoard.

Designed and build in Bend, Ore., it takes the balancing concepts of a skateboard and surfboard, paired with the tiller of a scooter for a runabout that golfers are embracing.

Bill Shea, general manager and director of golf at The Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road, Sequim, first saw the GolfBoard at the 2014 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Fla., and immediately thought it was nifty.

“It was a very neat looking, unique thing and it caught our eye, so we asked a rep to bring up one in October so people could try it,” Shea said. “For a small initial investment, in May we leased two for a one-month trial period but we plan to purchase them in June. We’ve had people from 65-75 on them and they’ve had a wonderful time.”

Powered by an environmentally friendly lithium battery, on one charge the GolfBoard easily can cover 18 holes and golfers say it dramatically speeds up the pace of the game. Shea said it is 3.5 feet from front to back and 1.5 feet wide, durable enough to carry a person up to 300 pounds plus his or her golf bag.

“You strap your bag on the front, stand on the board and use the thumb throttle on high or low power. There’s a forward and reverse and to brake, you just release the throttle,” Shea explained. “For turning, you lean to the side you want to turn toward. Because they are smaller (than golf carts), they can maneuver into tighter areas.”

Cruising speed is 10 mph on high power and 5 mph on low. According to the company website, the GolfBoard has a 4-wheel posi-traction drivetrain, turf tires, an ergonomically designed thumb throttle, a stability bar, shock absorbers for a smooth ride and an LED meter that indicates when it needs to be charged. The company’s motto is “Surf the Earth.”

“It’s just a different way of playing golf,” Shea grinned. “It’s exciting and it’s for all ages but it’s great for younger players because they have skateboard and surfing backgrounds. Young people are embracing those sports. We’re the first golf course in Washington to adopt them.”

The GolfBoards rent for $15 for nine holes; $22 for 18 holes.

“We’re trying to make it affordable and fun,” Shea said. “We’ve had more than 50 golfers try them so far and not one has said it was not a great experience. I don’t think it will replace golf carts but it’s an option for people — and it’s addicting,” Shea laughed. “It’s hard to play without one now because it makes the game incredibly fun and because it’s an adrenalin rush!”

Shea said any golfer age 16 and over can ride a GolfBoard after watching a six-minute safety video for liability purposes.

“We only have the two boards so reservations are important. The more time in advance you call, the more likely you are to get one,” Shea said.
