Hula dancing on at at Sequim Library

As part of the Summer Reading Program, the North Olympic Library System (NOLS) welcomes back instructors from Hālau Hula Ka Lei Mokihana I Ka Ua Noe to teach about Hawaiian hula.

All ages are invited to this 1.5-hour program on Saturday, July 29.

Sessions are set for 10:30 a.m. outside of the children’s area at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., and 2 p.m. at the outdoor stage behind the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

Kumu Hula Mokihana Melendez and featured dancer Makana Caro will explain the rich history of hula, demonstrate a kahiko (ancient hula dance), and teach a standard hula dance and basic Hawaiian words. Each movement of the hula dance and music tell part of a story.

The Port Angeles event will move indoors if it is raining, but the Sequim event will be outside rain or shine. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chairs, sun hats if it’s sunny or something to keep dry if it’s rainy.

Gospel group sets Sequim concert

Ernie Couch & Revival, a gospel music group that performs nationwide, will appear in concert at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 29, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

The musicians, based in Nashville, are three generations of one family: Ernie Couch; his son, Jason, and Jason’s teenage son, Memphis. The group was formed in 1993 by Ernie, on the keyboard, and Jason, singing baritone. Other musicians have been part of the group at times.

They offer a broad, high-energy spectrum of musical styles — traditional, country and contemporary — characterizing it as “Americana gospel.” Over the years, singers such as Patti Page and George Jones have contributed songs to the group’s CDs.

Admission to the concert is free. An offering will be taken to benefit the performers. They plan to sell CDs after the concert.

Train club sponsoring history presentation

The North Olympic Peninsula Railroaders is sponsoring “The History of Railroads in Clallam County,” a presentation by Steve Hauff, at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, on KSQM 91.5 FM.

Hauff is a local historian who has written several books on the subject.

‘Walk-about’ set at Woodcock Garden

With the Woodcock Demonstration Garden in full bloom, the public is invited to take a “walk-about” guided tour with a Clallam County Master Gardener 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 3.

The walk, held at the 2.74-acre garden at 2711 Woodcock Road, will focus on perennial and seasonal flowers and shrubs that are in bloom at this time and visitors’ interests.

Participants are encouraged to enjoy a picnic lunch at the graden following the “walk-about.”

Save the date: Toy show set

Fans of vintage toys and collectibles may want to mark their calendars for the Olympic Peninsula Toy and Collectibles Show, set for 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Guy Cole Event Center, 144 N. Blake Ave.

This inaugural event is expected to feature 30 tables of vendors, selling a wide variety of vintage toys and collectibles, including action figures, diecast Japanese robots, Hot Wheels/Matchbox, vinyl kaiju, playsets, models, trains, Lego, games, comics, nodders, Barbie, TMNT, Godzilla, Ultraman, Star Wars, Star Trek, Transformers, MOTU, Tonka, pop memorabilia and more.

PAFAC to host youth visual storytelling camp

The Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd., hosts Visual Storytelling, a workshop/camp for youths of ages 7-12, from 1-4 p.m., Aug. 14-18.

Inspired by the creative design of String and Shadow Theater, this week will be “a mix of magical realism and the art of well told stories,” organizers note. Campers will explore the visual elements of creative storytelling and learn how to bring their creativity to life.

Each camper will also get one adult and one youth ticket to the String and Shadow performance of “Ship of Fools” the on Aug. 17.

Call for World AIDS Day artists

Are you an artist living with or affected by HIV/AIDS? Have a friend or a loved one that you’ve lost or whose journey has impacted you greatly, or have something artistic to contribute to the conversation?

Apply online to be a part of the World AIDS Day exhibition set to be view at the Port Angeles Library, December 2023-February 2024.

Artwork in any medium such as literary, live performance, video, music, 2-D and 3-D artwork will be considered.

ARTJAM collective caps run

After 14 years of participation in the open studio tours and hosting ARTJAM, artists with the group are calling it a career, though they will still will continue to host events/fundraisers in the barn at Rock Hollow.

The group that features artists, performers and musicians started with five years of participation in the Sequim Open Studio Tour, with Susan Gansert Shaw joining up with the “barn sisters Mary Franchini and Lynne Armstrong, and adding Brian Buntain and Ed Crumley in year five, and more to follow in the preceding nine years.

Journaling workshops set at libraries

As part of the Summer Reading Program, the North Olympic Library System (NOLS) is hosting workshops focusing on journaling. The practice of journaling can inspire you to explore ideas and experiences, express creativity, and track goals. View event details at nols.org/journal.

Library staff will host a Bullet Journaling Mixer on Thursday, July 27 from 5:30-7 p.m. at Westend Taproom Tip & Sip in Forks for ages 21 and older, and for all adults from 2-2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St. Learn about the creative process of “bullet journaling” to record task lists and goals while sharing ideas and making friends at these casual events.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own journal and writing supplies or use some materials provided.
