Peninsula Chamber Singers is preparing its spring concert, “A Salute to Broadway,” under the direction of new conductor Dr. Jerome L. Wright.

The concerts are set for 7 p.m. Saturday, April 22, and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 23, both at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 Blake Ave. Sequim.

This concert features music from several Broadway musicals and features guest performer Carol Swarbrick-Dries.

Soloists from the Peninsula Singers will be featured as they perform excerpts from “My Fair Lady,” “The Music Man,” “Les Miserables,” songs by Cole Porter and selections from Romberg’s musical “New Moon.”

Patricia Guthrie, Peninsula Singers president, said all the proceeds from its seasonal concerts in the fall and spring help the group fund scholarships to Port Angeles and Sequim High School students.

This year’s spring concert will be a combination of narration, solo performances and a lot of Broadway.

Wright took up the role as conductor of the Peninsula Singers group in January after the death of long-time conductor Dewey Ehling.

He has conducted a variety of community-based adult choirs throughout Washington and has a vast knowledge of music with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and an advanced degree in orchestral conducting. He also serves as a conductor for the Trinity United Methodist Church choir.

Wright said the performance has “a certain charm about it that’s really fun” with Swarbrick-Dries as a guest performer and narrator.

“Carol is irrepressible; really an exiting personality for anyone who has not experienced her work,” he said.

Swarbrick-Dries is a Broadway star and co-founder of Readers Theatre Plus, a local group of actors that performed an array of play readings, musicals and comedies and donated money to many shows at local nonprofits and to high school graduates.

Wright explained that Swarbrick-Dries gives the audience a little bit of history about each selected Broadway piece before it is performed.

“It’s going to be an entertaining program with a real variety of Broadway,” Wright added.

Wright said the Peninsula Singers always is looking for new additions to the group. For more information about auditions, contact Wright at maestro@olympus.net.
