City of Sequim’s patriotic party set for July 4

The City of Sequim brings back its Independence Day Celebration for the second year with fireworks, live music, food, drinks and more.

Free festivities begin with the Sequim City Band’s annual “A Patriotic 4th of July Concert” at 3 p.m. Monday, July 4 at the James Center for the Performing Arts, 506 N. Blake Ave.

The Dungeness Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol presents colors with vocalist Karla Messerschmidt-Morgan leading the audience in singing “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Sequim City Band presents several melodies, such as Morton Gould’s “American Salute,” Carmen Dragon’s “America the Beautiful” arrangement, and selections from Meredith Willson’s “Music Man.” Band members continue their tradition of recognizing past and present service personnel with an “Armed Forces Salute” medley. They’ll also play some patriotic marches.

Afterward, the Buck Ellard Band takes the stage at 5:30 p.m., followed by Black Diamond Junction at 7:45 p.m. Capping the day’s entertainment is a 15-minute fireworks show slated for 10 p.m.

Food and beverage vendors will be on site, and the Sequim Valley Lions host a beer and wine garden and hot dog cart.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and a blanket to enjoy music at the outdoor venue.

Fireworks restrictions

The fireworks show and celebration follows the City of Sequim’s ban of the discharge of consumer fireworks in the city limits in 2018 following city residents’ advisory vote in Nov. 2017. This show is intended as a community celebration and to discourage the unlawful discharge of other fireworks.

Legal, consumer fireworks are allowed to be discharged from 9 a.m.-midnight on July 4 in unincorporated Clallam County east of the Elwha River unless there is a period of fire danger, according to the county’s code. As of press time, the level was low.
