Super chat set

Sequim community members can meet and have discussion with Superintendent Gary Neal at an informal coffee chat from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, at The Café at Shipley Center, 921 E. Civic lights go on

Join the City of Sequim and the City Arts Advisory Commission for the second annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony and Reception at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at the Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St. The holiday tree will be decorated with ornaments created by local fourth-graders on the theme of “What Sequim Means to Me.” Meet the Sugar Plum Fairy, her prince and members of the Arabian and Spanish dancers, as the Sequim Ballet performs excerpts from its upcoming performance of the “Nutcracker.”

Newcomers host lunch

Come ring in the holiday season with the Newcomers’ Club at its luncheon on Tuesday, Dec. 6, where the Port Angeles High School’s select choir will perform. The event is upstairs at the Red Lion Hotel, 221 N. Lincoln St., Port Angeles. Socializing begins at 11:30 a.m. followed by a buffet luncheon program. The luncheon cost will be $22 (tax and gratuity included) or program only fee is $5 and includes coffee and tea.

Winter birds talk focus

The Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society will present Christie Lassen of Wild Birds Unlimited for the Dec. 10 program, “Winter Care & Feeding in the Garden” as the third in the “Backyard Birding” series. Her presentation will cover general bird feeding, including types of feeders and different feeds for attracting specific birds with an emphasis on over-wintering species. All sessions are at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, from 10 a.m.-noon. The public is invited to attend any or all of the 10 sessions. For adults over age 18 a $5 fee will be payable for each class. After five classes are attended, a free year of membership in OPAS will be offered.

OPAA plans potluck

The Olympic Peninsula Art Association will have its next meeting and annual holiday potluck at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim, at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1. Bring your favorite dish to share and your personal place setting. OPAA will provide the ham and beverages. Meetings and presentations are free and open to the public. The program will be presented by Clark Mundy, a copper sculptor.

Church offers free Christmas celebrations

Sequim Community Church will have a free Christmas celebration for the community at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, and 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, in the Fellowship Center, 1000 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim.

Eat with Santa

The Parenting Matters Foundation and the First Teacher program will host a Breakfast with Santa from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Sequim Middle School cafeteria, 301 W. Hendrickson Road. Santa will give each child a book and photos will be taken with Santa by JG Photography. There will be crafts, music and a raffle. The cost is $10 for anyone over age 11 and $5 for children 2-10. NOLS rooms available

The North Olympic Library System will begin accepting 2017 meeting room reservation requests on Thursday, Dec. 1. New reservations may be requested up to 90 days in advance of the meeting date and can be made using the library’s online room reservation system, SPACES. To begin your reservation request, visit www.nols.org and select “Reserve a Meeting Room” from the “Services” tab. Thrift shop opens

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild’s thrift shop, 204 W. Bell St., will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3. The shop is filled with holiday decorations, holiday clothing, fine china and glassware.

Also featured will be designer handbags and jewelry, books, puzzles, furniture and special gifts. All white-tagged items will be marked half-price. Consignors and volunteers always are needed. Call 683-7044 for more information.

Free medical emergencies boating clinic set

Robert Stem, safety officer for the North Olympic Sail and Power Squadron, will present “Medical Emergencies On-Board” at the monthly Boating Skills clinic, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Gathering Place, Sunland Golf and Country Club, 135 Fairway Drive, Sequim.

Stem will cover bleeding, burns, broken bones, strokes, heart attacks, helicopter evacuation and first aid courses and certification. It is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Mike Witkin at 457-1082.

Deadline extended for glass exhibit entries

The City Arts Advisory Commission has extended the deadline to Friday, Dec. 16, for entries of glass artwork, which may include mixed media utilizing glass, for the next exhibit “Fused, Fired, and Stained … All Things Glass Exhibit,” to be displayed in the lobby of the Civic Center, 152 W. Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays-Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491.

Thursday, Dec. 1: Green salad, tomato soup, chicken pot pie, steamed broccoli, baked apples
