Local women have a chance to qualify for local college scholarships thanks to a new partnership.

The Girlfriend Factor, a nonprofit organization in Palm Desert, Calif., that provides educational grants to adult women, is extending financial assistance to motivated women at Peninsula College this fall.

The relationship started in 2005 between the agency and Olympic Cellars Winery, makers of Working Girl Wines.

Joan Busick, co-founder of the nonprofit, said she read an article about winery owner Kathy Charlton and her team of women and was so inspired by their style and efforts that the agency named its educational grants after the winery’s Go Girl Red wine.

So far, The Girlfriend Factor’s grants have assisted more than 70 women achieve their goals of becoming self-sufficient by earning college degrees and certifications.

Charlton supported a special fashion event for The Girlfriend Factor, and in appreciation, the agency is extending help here.

For the winery’s summer concert series on July 28, proceeds from the Random Manor concert (tickets $10)  benefit the scholarship program.

“We share a very similar philanthropic mission and approach,” Charlton said.

“We help women to help themselves, provide opportunities for women to gather and build friendships and maintain ‘fun’ as the operative with a lot of chocolate thrown in along the way! I think we were destined to come together.”
