Ellis named Logging Show’s ‘Honorary Logger’

Show features fireworks, dance, equipment pulls and more

As tradition, the Sequim Logging Show, set for May 10-11, has named this year’s “Honorary Logger.”

Don Ellis, 91, is a third generation Sequim resident, and was born in Dungeness to Matt, a salesman, and Rachel Ellis, a homemaker. He has one brother and three sisters.

Ellis attended the Dungeness Schoolhouse and later graduated from Sequim High School in 1952. When not in school, he worked on the family farm and milked 50-plus cows.

After graduation, Ellis was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Korea with the 25th Infantry for two years. He later married Mary Lu and he has four children — two boys and two girls. Ellis now has 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

He worked as a machinist for 33 years at Port Angeles’ Rayonier Mill.

Through his time in Sequim, Ellis became a lifetime member of the Sequim VFW, and a charter member of the Sequim Elks Club.

Ellis served as a volunteer firefighter for 25 years with Clallam County Fire District 3, and also served on the Jamestown Tribe’s Fish and Game Committee for 10 years.

He said he considers himself an avid outdoorsman and loves fishing and hunting.

Ellis, a Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe elder, was a Grand Pioneer during the 2018 Sequim Irrigation Festival. He’ll appear in the Grand Parade at noon on May 11.
