Milestone: Minard earns rare double VFW honors

For Ozzy Minard’s hard work and efforts in local scouting activities, VFW Post 4760 (Sequim) presented him with not one but two of its annual awards.

By virtue of the Port Angeles teen’s extraordinary achievement as a BSA Eagle Scout, and as Quartermaster as a Sea Scout, Minard received its Department of Washington VFW Scout of the Year Award (eligible to Eagle Scouts), and its Department of Washington Scout of the Year Award (eligible to members of any scouting organization).

At the Sea Scout Ship 1212 meeting on Jan. 3, Minard was formally honored with both the awards by Douglas Hoople, VFW Washington State Scout team chair.

With Minard’s fellow Sea Scouts standing in formation, Hoople presented Quartermaster Minard with a plaque and associated certificates, announced a total of $1,000 in scholarship monies, and spoke of the extraordinary effort and achievement required to win either award and his achievement of earning both simultaneously.

Afterward, Jack Flanagan of VFW Post 4760 of Sequim presented Minard with a local certificate of merit and a supplementary check of $200.

Also in attendance was Steve Hendrickson, VFW Post 4760’s quartermaster, and the former VFW District 14 commander.

The main adults associated with the Sea Scout Ship 1212 are Jared Minard, the scoutmaster, Doreen Minard and Chet Epperson. Sea Scouts meet at the Port Angeles Yacht Club at 6:30 p.m. each Wednesday. For more information, call Jared Minard at 760-689-8455.
